Salford is a city constantly changing and moving into an exciting future as a thriving cultural, economic and residential location.

From urban buzz to greenbelt tranquillity, Salford is building on the mixture of its waterfront, urban and countryside environments to create places where people want to live, work, invest and visit.

Take a look at our short film which will introduce you to some of the great things happening in Salford right now.

Cultural Diversity

We’re proud to be home to MediaCityUK, a purpose-built home for creative and digital businesses, this inspirational site for media sits along side the Lowry Theatre a magnificent venue hosting culturally diverse and popular shows.

The city of Salford covers 37 square miles and the five districts of Salford, Eccles, Worsley, Irlam and Cadishead, and Swinton and Pendlebury. Some 246,000 people are proud to call Salford their home.

The Blackfriars, Broughton and Ordsall districts of central Salford are just one minute's walk from the heart of Manchester's shopping and central business districts - just across the River Irwell which runs between the two cities.

History and culture

As one of the world's first industrial cities, Salford is flooded with historic achievements - including the world's first free public library. Worsley village was the site of the transport revolution thanks to the Bridgewater Canal and there is 600 years of history packed into the haunted Tudor house, Ordsall Hall. Salford Museum and Art Gallery is starting an exciting redevelopment programme which will transform it into a national centre for social history.

Set in a magnificent waterside location at the heart of the redeveloped Salford Quays, The Lowry is an architectural flagship with a unique and dynamic identity. It brings together a wide variety of performing and visual arts under one roof. Gallery spaces show the works of LS Lowry alongside contemporary exhibitions. A restaurant, cafes and bars are situated along the southern side of the building, with spectacular waterside views overlooking the expansive Manchester Ship Canal.

Working for Salford City Council

What does it mean to work for Salford City Council some comments from the team:

“I have now been working at Salford for almost four years and have received continuous support, as well as training and development opportunities, which have enabled me to progress to my current role as an Advanced Social Worker”

“I began working at Salford on a fixed term contract, I was lucky enough to be made permanent and subsequently moved to a strategic role; Salford has given me opportunities and the support to grow and progress in my chosen career.”

Here at Salford we put people at the heart of everything we do, Salford is a diverse city which is expanding rapidly new businesses are opening and homes are increasing and we at Salford City Council endeavour to provide the best possible service to the residents of Salford. The spirit of Salford is all about the people of Salford, we want to celebrate the diversity and achievements of our city and the amazing stories of our staff and residents and the things they do to make a difference.

No matter what you are looking for there is something for you in Salford, from the hustle of the city to the leafy village parks of Roe Green, Salford has a wide diversity of people and homes. Salford is home to the Salford Red Devils and the BBC and hosts music and food festivals. The Lowry Theatre is another jewel in the crown with comedy, music and drama all under one roof.

The 4 Ps - Pride, Passion, People and Personal responsibility - are our values that underpin the way we work, make decisions and do business. The values are central to the way we communicate about the council and the way in which we behave with colleagues, customers and partners - so that we live and breathe our values each day.

Here’s what our staff say about their pride in Salford

I'm proud of and committed to our city, its people, our work, and I demonstrate the 'Spirit of Salford' in everything I do.

"Having worked for the authority for 25 years (and I still can't believe it!) my career has always been in housing and I've worked with many characters and colleagues along the way. I'm very much a people person and proud of working with residents in what they have also achieved.

Working in housing is a demanding role but I take pride in what I have achieved so far, from operational to strategic, it's a role I'm proud to have been a part of from rehousing residents, to stock options."

Here's how our staff demonstrate Passion

I am optimistic and ambitious for the city and its people, being creative and positive about change and making the most of opportunities.

"I love organising events to mark significant dates, such as Holocaust Memorial Day and Manchester Pride, because I know how meaningful they are for the communities and people they represent. For me personally, it's also great to be able to involve my family in these events, especially my eight year old daughter Molly who takes part in the Manchester Pride parade and wears her Holocaust Memorial Day badge with pride."

How's how our staff demonstrate a commitment to People

I respect and care for others, treating everyone fairly, listening and acting on the things people say.

"I love working with these groups to improve life for people. Access 2 All Areas was recently awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, for their hard work, while the council's staff equality groups are inspirational for their commitment to bringing about positive changes.

These groups make the city and the council a diverse, fair and inclusive place to be for everyone and I am proud to work with them and to contribute to their work."

A member of staff shares how they embody Personal responsibility

I am honest, taking responsibility and ownership for my actions and decisions and using resources that I am trusted with wisely.

"Working within Bereavement Services is a very satisfying job. It gives me an opportunity to help families who are in very difficult situations, which is very rewarding. For me it is about taking responsibility to make a difference to our service users in very difficult times for them."
