Georgia Buckley joined Stockport Council as a Business Administration Higher Apprentice in April 2015 working in the Health, Safety and Wellbeing team and secured a job in the team six months in.

Georgia then progressed on to a Leadership and Management Higher Apprenticeship where she worked for 12 months within the Growth Team (Place Directorate) before securing her current job in the Development and Regeneration Team. Georgia said, “Applying for an apprenticeship was the best decision I’ve ever made, the experience I’ve gained learning whilst working has been invaluable and has opened so many doors!

Before I joined Stockport Council, I’d finished college and was unsure on the career I wanted which is why I didn’t apply to go to university. I worked in retail full time but knew I wanted to develop my personal and professional skills, and when I saw the opportunity of an apprenticeship at Stockport Council, I thought it was too good of an opportunity not to apply for.

During my time as an apprentice, I achieved many of my goals including building my confidence, gaining new skills, managing projects and events and gaining new qualifications.

Early on in my Level 5 apprenticeship, I was nominated for, and successful in securing both ‘Higher Apprentice of The Year’ and ‘Overall Apprentice of the Year’ Awards, which I believe was due to the experience and support my colleagues in the Council provided me with which allowed me to excel in my role.

I have been given a number of development and training opportunities consisting of: excel training, minute taking courses, interview training, specialised information system training and many more. I have been given the opportunity of shadowing experienced, specialised officers, managers and heads of service, allowing me to gain in depth understanding of different roles within the Council".

Georgia has also attained a number of qualifications in her time at Stockport Council. These consist of:

  • Business Administration Level 4
  • Leadership and Management Level 5
  • BSc Property and Real Estate (Chartered Surveyor) Degree (Working Towards)
  • Emergency First Aid at Work
