We asked Margaret, a Social Worker on our Stockport Family Team about how her career led her to join us at Stockport Council, what its like to be part of Stockport Family & what she loves about her job!

How long have you been in your role?

19 months

Where did you work before joining the Stockport Family team?

I did my placement in Stockport and was working as a carer in a care home part-time whilst doing it.

Why did you become a Social Worker?

Mainly because of my personal experiences of being in the care system and I wanted to be that person that made a difference for the young people and families.

What do you love about your job?

I love how every day isn’t the same – you can never predict what each day will hold. I love the young people and families we work with and seeing the relationships develop with them. It’s a privilege when families let you into their lives.

The Stockport Family model where you work with young people and families at every stage with no handover points has been good for my learning and growth – being adaptable and each stage is a learning stage.

What drew you to apply to this role? Why did you choose Stockport Family?

I did second placement at MASSH in Stockport, working with Early Help team. I knew I wanted to say in Stockport but the people sold it to me – everyone in Stockport is so lovely, kind and supportive and you never feel alone. Watching myself going from a scared student to Social Worker made me feel comfortable that it’s where I wanted to be.

What do you think makes Children's Social Work at Stockport Council so special?

One of our values is that we’re humans first before professionals and that really shines through in Stockport – we value families and see it as a privilege to support and work with them. We are support-based and value the high challenge/high support. There is a big focus on relationship building.

With Stockport you get pushed out of your comfort zone so you’re constantly learning – you can’t be stagnant in your growth.

From high up you can see they’re always driving to see what can change in terms of inequalities, diversity – there’s always something going on to make us think beyond our own world so we can empower families.
